Festival of Books 2024: A Celebration of Stories and Community
The Festival of Books in the Alleghenies extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to making the 2024 Festival a resounding success! From inspiring keynote addresses to engaging workshops and lively children’s activities, this year’s event truly celebrated the power of stories and community.
Friday Fundraiser with Jennifer Haigh
The Festival kicked off with an unforgettable Friday Fundraiser featuring acclaimed author Jennifer Haigh. Her keynote address moved the audience with laughter, tears, and heartfelt memories. Thanks to Jennifer’s publisher, all attendees received a complimentary copy of her book. The event saw a turnout of approximately 100 people and raised an impressive $4,950, which was donated to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) of Cambria, Bedford, and Somerset counties.
A Vibrant Saturday with Authors and Activities
Saturday dawned bright and sunny, welcoming 53 incredible local and regional authors representing a diverse range of genres and age groups. Attendees had the opportunity to meet their favorite writers, discover new books, and celebrate literature in a lively and engaging atmosphere. The Festival drew an enthusiastic crowd of book lovers, aspiring writers, families, and community members, all eager to connect over their shared love of storytelling.
Children’s Tent: A Hub of Fun and Learning
The Children’s Tent was alive with excitement, offering a variety of enriching activities. Highlights included visits from Smokey Bear, the Ebensburg and Cambria County Libraries, PA Woods and Forest, and the IU8 STEM Rocks van. St. Francis University’s Rural Outreach Chemistry for Kids captivated young minds, while face painting and balloon animals brought endless smiles to little faces.
Writers Activity Tent: A Space for Inspiration and Growth
The Writers Activity Tent buzzed with creative energy, hosting a series of engaging workshops for writers of all levels. Notable sessions included an ekphrastic writing workshop by Dr. Brennan M. Thomas, “A Word is Worth a Thousand Pictures” by Thomas Slatcoff, “Share Your Story with Confidence” by T.J. Rose, a poetry workshop by Kathry Fieser, an interactive session on editors by Debra Reynolds, and a unique “Workshop Matchmaking” event by Scribble House.
A Stormy End, but a Festival to Remember
Unfortunately, the day was cut short by a severe thunderstorm. However, the enthusiasm and joy shared throughout the event left a lasting impression on all who attended.
